![]() ![]() ![]() Musselburgh makes an excellent base for exploring being located just off all the major road routes in Central Southern Scotland.
EDINBURGH CITY CENTRE Eildon House is just a short bus ride from the attractions of Edinburgh City Centre where the Royal Mile and Old Town sit side by side with the Georgian New Town. Here you will find the spectacular Edinburgh Castle, Holyrood Palace, Museums and Art Galleries such as the Royal Scottish Museum and The Royal Academy. Princess Street and the surrounding area have excellent shops with many internationally renowned stores such as Louis Vuitton, Armani and Harvey Nichols rubbing shoulders with Kilt makers, Tartan suppliers and ethnic outlets. There is an excellent Tourist Information Centre ( TIC ) run by VisitScotland at the East end of Princess Street just above the Waverley Train Station.

Some require the use of a car but many are possible using our fantastic Public Transport network or one of the many private bus tour companies that operate locally. East Lothian 'Edinburgh's Coast and Countryside' offers a superb range of visitor attractions in addition to its many Blue flag award winning beaches. There are nature reserves such as The John Muir Country Park at Dunbar and Tyninghame, Musselburgh Lagoons, Aberlady Bay and St Abbs Head. Take a boat trip around the Bass Rock to view Puffins, seals and the largest Gannet colony in the Southern hemisphere or view them from webcams and the award winning Scottish Seabird center inNorth Berwick, Eve is happy to advise on a wonderful day out visiting the award winning North Berwick Seabird Centre, Tantallon and Dirleton Castles, The Museum of Flight, Preston Mill, or St Mary’s Church Haddington. Southqueensferry & The Forth Rail Bridge are easily accessible and can be combined with a cruise to see the bridge at its best advantage. The Edinburgh Tour buses operate a combined Edinburgh Tour and Island cruise from the City Centre for those without their own transport. The cruise offers the option to disembark and explore the nature reserve / bird sanctuary at Inchcolm Island, see Puffins and seals, visit the stunning Inchcolm Priory and seek out the remnants of Edinburgh's world war 11 defences. Visit, Hopetoun House at South Queensferry, Deep Sea World and The Falkirk Wheel. It is also an easy drive to the ancient town of Stirling to see beautiful Stirling Castle and climb the Wallace Monument.
St Andrews & Fife with its Open Championship Golf courses is only about 1 hour 15 minutes drive away. St Andrews itself is a stunning town and home to the oldest University in cotland. It makes a fantastic day out with the opportunity to visit Falkland Palace (Hunting Lodge of the Stuart Kings) and the quaint fishing villages of the 'Neuk' of Fife as part of a day trip.
Loch Lomond is another favourite combination for a day tour. Visit Linlithgow Palace (birth place of Mary Queen of Scots) then on to Stirling followed by Doune, Callander, Loch Lomond and the Trossachs.
The Scottish Borders with day out to the historic Border towns can be combined with a trip to Rosslyn Chapel where the Da Vinci Code was filmed. Visit, Abbotsford home of Sir Walter Scott, Melrose Abbey burial place of Robert the Bruce, the beautiful Dryburgh and Jedburgh Abbeys or Floors Castle and / or Thirlstane Castle.
Glencoe, Fort William, Ben Nevis, Inverness & Loch Ness returning via the Spey valley and Pitlochry is quite feasible. For those who do not wish to drive, there are numerous excellent bus tours available from Edinburgh and some that will collect you from Eildon.
Birdwatching at Musselburgh Lagoons, Inchcolm Island, North Berwick and Aberlady Bay. An hourly bus service runs daily to Aberlady and North Berwick . Aberlady is home to the Scottish Ornithologists' Club (see links -recreation) and North Berwick has the excellent award winning Scottish Seabird centre.
